Abstract

1305503 Crimping fibres TEIJIN Ltd 7 May 1971 [7 May 1970] 13801/71 Heading D1F Crimped polyester filaments having high modulus and percentage crimp are produced by a process comprising the sequential steps of (a) heat-treating a bundle of drawn filaments of a linear polyester in which at least 85 mole% of the recurring units are derived from ethylene terephthalate, at a temperature of 135‹C to 240‹C preferably 150‹ to 230‹, and under a tension of at least 0.3 g/denier, preferably at least 0.5 g/denier and at most 3.5 g/denier (b) feeding the filaments to the nip rollers of a stuffer box while maintaining them under a tension of at least 0.1 g/denier, preferably at least 0.2 g/denier, usually at most 1.0 g/denier and at a temperature which is between 100‹ and 140‹C, preferably 110‹ to 140‹C, and is at least 10‹C lower, preferably at least 20‹C lower, than the heat-treating temperature (c) crimping the filaments in the stuffer box and (d) withdrawing the filaments therefrom. Step (a) may be effected by passage of the filaments over a succession of heated rollers or plates or by hot gases and reduction of their temperature to the value demanded by step (b) may occur by natural cooling perhaps assisted by passage of the filaments over rollers maintained at an appropriate temperature. The filaments, if desired after a further heat treatment under relaxed conditions, may be cut into staple fibres.
