Abstract

1333679 False-twist crimped polyester yarns TEIJIN Ltd 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 26364/71 Headings D1F and D1W A process for producing a false-twist crimped polyester yarn comprises false-twisting a polyester multifilament having a birefringence #<SP>n</SP> in the range 0.03-0.145 while heat setting the filament in the twisted state at 160‹C to 210‹C at a draft dr which satisfies the relation: -250 #n + 38 # dr # -150 #n + 17. The yarn produced preferably has a density d in the range 1.38-1.395 gm/cc and a 'total percentage crimp' TC#30%. A modified yarn having a density d in the range 1.38-1.395 gm/cc, a 'total percentage crimp' TC#20%, and a torque #26 turns/25cm may be produced by subjecting the first mentioned yarn to a second heat setting at a temperature higher than the temperature at which the yarn has 'been initially set. The polyester multifilament preferably has a birefringence #<SP>n</SP> in the range 0.06-0.135 and is preferably heat set initially at a temperature in the range 170‹C-200‹C. The total percentage crimp TC is measured by recording the length 1 0 of yarn under an initial load plus a heavier load; placing the yarn under the initial load in boiling water; removing the load and allowing the yarn to dry; recording the length 1 2 of the dried yarn under the initial load plus the heavier load; removing the heavier load and recording the length 1 3 of the yarn under the initial load. The total percentage crimp TC is expressed by:- The yarn produced is said to possess uniform dyeing properties. Several examples of process conditions are listed.
