Abstract

1305077 Etching MACDERMID Inc 14 Sept 1970 [12 Sept 1969] 43860/70 Heading B6J A method of regenerating a chromic acid etching solution, e.g. for plastics substrates, comprises adding, with mixing, an alkali metal permanganate selected from sodium, potassium and lithium permanganates and mixtures thereof to the solution at a temperature of from 60 to 200‹ F. in a quantity of from 0À10 to 5À00 pounds per U.S. gallon of etching solution. The etchant may be a mixture of chromic, phospheric and sulphuric acids with water acting on a substrate of polypropylene or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene to be subsequently coated with metal. The permanganate may be added in powdered or crystalline form over a period of 5 to 30 minutes, the resultant sludge being removed from the regenerated etchant by filtration or decantation. The method may be used is a continuous etching process using an etching solution containing 1 to 25% by weight of chromium trioxide in solution and at least 30% by weight of sulphuric or phosphoric acids or mixtures thereof at a temperature of 60 to 200‹ F. a portion of the etchant being removed for regeneration periodically.
