Abstract
1304226 Lamp holders ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 17 Sept 1970 [25 Sept 1969] 44420/70 Heading H2E A lamp-socket structure comprises a unitary housing 21, of electrically insulating material, for mounting in a mating aperture in a housing wall, the housing comprising a bulb receiving cavity 24 at an opposite end to a socket for a male contact 31, an intermediate cavity 26 through which a contact element 27 extends to provide a bulb-contact portion 28 in cavity 24 and a male-contact 29 in the socket as shown, the contact element being a snap-fit in the structure, an annular flange 37 carrying a resilient collar 38 retaining the housing wall between it and projections 39, 40. A contact element is provided for each bulb contact and is inserted from the bulb receiving cavity such that leaf contact 29 snaps upwardly behind a lip provided in cavity 26 to retain the element therein. The cavity 24 is adapted to receive a bayonet-based bulb. A further ground strap 71 may be mounted in a channel in the housing to contact the metal base of the bulb 25 and also provide a contact similar to 29 for a ground pin. Also a bore (49, Fig. 5, not shown) may be provided to guide an optical fibre to aim at the bulb filament, the bore extending through a projection near the bulb. The pins or male contacts each have an offset lance 35 to engage behind a shoulder 34 to prevent withdrawal of the pin. Seals 41 of rubber are placed over each spigot 33 coaxial with the contact receiving bore 32 and are interconnected by webs (Fig. 6, not shown). A thin diaphragm may seal each seal bore until pierced by a pin. A skirt 45 is provided about the seals and spigots. The flange 32 may be part of an integral or separate collar 22 and the body may comprise a portion having the bulb receiving cavity therein and a further portion having the collar therewith. In either case both parts are ultrasonically joined or heat staked together before the structure is used. The housing is mounted in a mating aperture by passing projections 39, 40 through corresponding recesses in said aperture, compressing resilient collar 38 and axially turning the housing to locate shoulders 48 on the far side of the panel to the spigot end of the housing. A projection (83, Fig. 12, not shown) may be provided on a shoulder 48 and be directed towards flange 37 such that after said axial turning, it engages a slot in the panel and locks the lamp-socket structure in position.
