Abstract

1304020 Sawmill log carriage GREENLEAF HOLDINGS Ltd 29 Jan 1970 [29 Jan 1969] 4341/70 Heading B5L A sawmill log carriage 14, Fig. 3, adapted to ride on rails 16, 17 to carry a log 1 past a pair of laterally spaced vertical saw blades 15, e.g. circular saw blades, includes chucking means for axially centering and securing a log in the carriage and indexing means mounted on the carriage remote from the chucking means and operatively connected to the chucking means so that the log can be rotated to a selected position and maintained in that position prior to its passage between the saw blades. In one embodiment the log 1 is carried between a pair of rotatable chucks on the carriage 14. One of the chucks 11, Fig. 2, is linked via pulleys 34, 35 and belt 38 to a shaft 30, and this shaft is in turn connected via sprockets 29, 32 and a belt or chain 33 to a rotatable shaft 24 carrying an indexing template 28. The template rotates with the log, and the log is held in a selected angular position by engaging a locking pin 41, Fig. 3, in a selected one of a number of radial slots in the template. The locking pin may be operated byanhydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 40 as shown or by a solenoid switch or manually operated lever. The template and log may be rotated by an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 44 and piston 45 coupled to the belt or chain 33, or by a solenoid valve, electric motor, or manually. The template 28 may be exchanged for one which provides for different angular positions. The shaft 30 may be omitted so that the chuck 11 and shaft 24 are coupled directly. In another embodiment the template 28 is replaced by a quadrant carrying a number of circumferentially spaced reed switches and the shaft 30 carries a pointer arranged to contact a selected one of these switches. The arrangement is such that when a reed switch in the desired angular location is selected a solenoid valve is opened which causes fluid to be fed to the cylinder 44 thus rotating the log, shaft 30, and pointer, until the latter contacts the selected switch. In a further embodiment similar to the last, the shaft 24 is omitted and the belt or chain 38 is driven directly. The sawmill may include limit switches which prevent turning or indexing of the log except when the carriage is in the loading and unloading position.
