Abstract

860,056. Book-trimming machines. HUNKELER, J. April 10, 1959 [April 11, 1958], No. 12283/59. Class 31 (1). A machine for trimming book bodies 47 comprises a turn-table 2 having clamping positions A, B, C and D, Fig. 5, for the book bodies, trimming stations B and C at which are located trimming knives 4, 5 and means for intermittently rotating the turn-table so as to bring the book bodies in turn to the trimming stations. Loading and unloading stations are provided at A and D respectively. The knives 4, 5 are secured to beams 7, 8, Fig. 2, which are movable towards and away from the book bodies by means of an hydraulic cylinder 12, Fig. 4, the piston of which operates through a rod system 13 and levers 10, 14. A hand wheel is provided for adjusting the distance between the knives. The book bodies are each clamped, before rotation of the turn-table, by means 32 comprising a clamping plate 39 which is lowered by means of levers one, 37, of which has interacting therewith a roller 40 which is forced upwardly against a spring 42 by an hydraulically liftable plate so that when the turn-table is rotated, the roller 40 runs on to a ring flange and rests on it throughout a rotational sweep of about 180 degrees. The four clamping means are jointly slidable in slideways 33, Fig. 5, through spindles 34 controlled by a bevel gear shaft 35. The turn-table is rotated by an electric motor which drives a bevel gear 20, Fig. 2, keyed to a shaft 21 on which is seated a gear segment 22 which engages part of the circumference of a spur gear 23 keyed to a shaft 24 of the turn-table. Also seated on the shaft 21 is a drum 25 having a cam which causes a bolt 26 to engage and disengage with one of four bores 27 in the turn-table to accurately fix the turn-table during the trimming operation. The gear 20 has connected thereto a drive wheel 28 for a roller 29 provided with cams 30 for controlling operation of the clamping means 32. The turn-table may alternatively be driven by a cyclically interrupted electric drive. Trimming waste is removed by means of compressed-air supplied by a compressor 44. In operation, the knife 4 simultaneously trims both a fore-edge of a book body and an edge at right-angles thereto and the other edge of the book body is concurrently trimmed by the knife 5. The turn-table may be turned intermittently through an angle other than a right-angle in which case the knife 4 is correspondingly constructed.
