Abstract

1,097,404. Grinding. GIUSEPPE MINGANTI & CO. S.p.A. Feb. 9, 1966 [Feb. 11, 1965; April 22, 1965], No. 5603/66. Heading B3D. A multi-spindle machine for grinding diesel fuel nozzles comprises a drum 6 mounted to be stepwise rotatable in a reciprocatable drum supporting member 8, a plurality of work spindles 7 which are provided with diesel nozzle chucking means on their free ends and are rotatably driven by a motor located in the drum, means 14, 16 for effecting the stepwise rotation of the drum to cause the spindles to stop at a plurality of work stations, and grinding devices 21, 22, 23 mounted at the work stations for grinding the flat ends, tapered nozzle seats and the cylindrical bores, which serve as guides for the valve stem, of the nozzles. The supporting member is reciprocated to present the nozzles to the grinding devices by rotation of a cylindrical member 11 having a cam groove engaged by a follower 12 carried by the support member, and the stepwise rotation of the drum 6 in the member is effected by rotation of a shaft 15 connected by a Maltese cross device 14, 16 and gearing 18, 19, 20 to the drum. Facing each work station I, II, III are the grinding devices S1 S2, S3. Grinding device S1 for the flat end of the nozzle consists of a disc 21 or cup-shaped wheel 121 mounted on crossslides 25, 26 movable by hydraulic cylinders 28, 29. The movement of cross-slide 26 along a guide 27 moves the grinding device from a working to a dressing position. Grinding device S2 for the conical valve seat consists of a grinding pin 22 mounted with its motor and gear unit 31 on a disc (32, Fig. 10) secured to an intermediate disc (33) having a dovetail engagement (135) with a second intermediate disc (35) mounted on a disc (37) slidable along a guideway (38) in a frame member (9). The disc (32) is angularly adjustable relative to disc (33) and the feed of the grinding pin is effected by movement of disc (33) along dovetail (135) which is perpendicular to the grinding surface of the pin 22. Movement of the discs along guideway (38) is used during a dressing operation, the movement along the guideways (38) and (135) being effected by hydraulic cylinders or cams. Grinding device S3 for the bores consists of a grinding pin 23 carried by a driving unit 39 slidable axially on a slide 40, in turn, slidable on a transverse slide 41 inclined at an angle parallel to a line joining the centres of the work spindles at stations I and III. Beciprocation of unit 39 during grinding or dressing is effected by a lever rocked about a pivot 142 by a cam device 44. The slide 40 is urged down slide 41 by gravity to effect feeding of the grinding pin 23 and is lifted against gravity by a cam engaging a lever abutted by a rod (45) on the slide 40. The grinding pins 22, 23 are dressed by devices (49, 50, Fig. 6) on a support (51) vertically movable between operative and inoperative positions. The grinding-wheel (21) is dressed by a device 30 when the device S1 is in its dressing position. At each angular position of the drum 6, the support 8 is advanced twice; at station I, the nozzle is ground on one advancing movement and replaced with an unground nozzle at the other movement, and at stations II and III the nozzles are rough ground during the first advancing movement and finish ground during the second advancing movement, the grinding devices being dressed between the advancing movements. In another embodiment, the drum has four working stations, one of which a work loading and unloading station, and the workpiece spindles are arranged substantially radially of the drum.
