Abstract

1302915 Periscopic viewing device; PHILIPS USFA NV 2 Feb 1970 [17 June 1969] 4867/70 Heading B7J [Also in Divisions G2 and H4] A periscope, useful for driving vehicles at night, for example, comprises an objective lens system 3 with a field of view of at least 50 degrees, an electron-optical image intensifier 4 having a substantially spherical photo-cathode receiving light from the objective 3, and an ocular 6 for viewing the fluorescent screen of the intensifier 4, and is characterized in that the mean image surface of objective 3 is substantially coincident with the photo-cathode and has a curvature substantially equal to that of the photo-cathode, the objective 3 also being provided with a field stop for intercepting part of the light derived from the edge of the field of view so as to attenuate light incident at 20 degrees to the optic axis by 50%. The ocular preferably has a magnification factor 12% greater for light from the edge of the fluorescent screen relative to that from the screen centre. The photo-cathode curvature and the electronoptical system may give an image reduction factor of between 2À2 and 4. Two periscopes may be placed side-by-side for binocular viewing.
