Abstract
1302852 Grinding POWEEGRIND Ltd 5 March 1970 [7 Dec 1968] 58254/68 Heading B3D A lens blocking or mounting apparatus comprises means 14 for eccentric formation of the lens blocking material 6a relative to the body 9 of the block so that the body or a work-holder engaging the body may be held in a chuck for rotation about one axis O and may also be located by the eccentric formation for rotation about a different axis G. An outer sleeve 2 has an inner member 3 eccentrically disposed therein and a cooling ring 4 at one end forming a circular cavity 5 coaxial with the sleeve. A work-holder 6 is disposed in the cavity and a rim 7 on the ring is provided for locating the lens 10 with its optical axis O coaxial with the axis of the ring. A low melting point material, such as pitch, wax or a metal alloy, is introduced through a gap 7a in the rim. Recesses 6a are formed in the material by pins 13 on the member 3 which is disposed with its axis G coaxial with the geometric centre of the lens. The lens and block 9 can be removed from the apparatus by a pin, the work-holder 6, or the material if a workholder is not used, permitting mounting of the lens in a chuck for rotation about the optical axis O, and the recesses 6a permitting mounting for rotation about the axis G. In another arrangement, the pins 13 engage directly with recesses in the work-holder. In a further embodiment, the locating surface is formed on the ejector pin and is tapered and formed with a flat reference surface.
