Abstract
1,156,455. Lathe and tools for turning aspheric surfaces. D. VOLK. 28 April, 1967, No. 19744/67. Headings B3B, B3D and B3T. Apparatus for turning aspheric surfaces on workpieces, e.g. of optical material for contact lenses, comprises a tool of generally cylindrical or conical form having an inclined cutting face of generally elliptical outline, and means for feeding the tool relative to the rotating workpiece along the workpiece axis with the apex of the ellipse on the axis and the cutting face inclined thereto. The tool may be solid, 26, Fig. 7, for forming concave surfaces or hollow 26a, Fig. 8, for forming convex surfaces. Where the angle # + # is less than, equal to or greater than 90 degrees the surfaces formed are respectively ellipsoids, paraboloids and hyperboloids. The tool shank, Fig. 3 has a rectangular section portion 27 with a recess 29 therein whereby it is clamped by a bolt 28, Fig. 1, in a swivel post 20 mounted on a support 21 which may be elevated by rotating it on a screwed projection 22 on the cross-slide 16. The tool may be of hardened steel or of metal with embedded diamond particles. The tool stem on which the cutting face is formed may be an elliptic cylinder or cone and the cutting face may be slightly curved in concave or convex sense, thus providing, where desired, a cutting face not truly elliptical.
