853,491. Boring and milling metals; altering physical structure. PREIS, G. Feb. 14, 1957 [Feb. 14, 1956; Aug. 4, 1956], No. 5115/57. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). A cutting-tool for finishing hollow cylindrical workpieces. comprises a cylindrical holder carrying radial teeth having curved cutting-edges which are radially-adjustable or inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the holder to vary the effective cutting-diameter of the tool. In one example teeth 10, Fig. 1, are slidably-mounted in radial slots 26, Fig. 1a, of a holder 16, and have spherical recesses 14 at one end for engagement with balls 15 supported between a conical ring 16 and wedges 18 secured to the holder by bolts 17, 19, and a bearing-ring 21. The teeth 10 are pressed against the balls 15 by screwed rings 12, 13 engaging inclined faces 30 of the teeth 10 to adjust the ends of the teeth 10 radially. Plane surfaces may be machined if the tool is mounted on the spindle of a milling- machine. In another example a cutting-ring 31, Fig. 3, with generally spherical teeth; is angularly adjustable over a spherical section 33 of a holder 34 and is keyed thereto by Woodruff keys 35 engaging longitudinal grooves 331, 351. The cutting-ring 31 is set to any inclined position by screws 41, 42, engaging one of a pair of rings 36, 37, pivoted at 39, 40, on the holder 34 and engaging opposite faces of the ring 31. A further screw 44 engaging the pivot 40 secures the assembly in adjusted position. In a modification, the radius-of-curvature 47, Fig. 4, of the cutting-teeth 311 is greater than the central radius 45 of the tool, so that tilting of the cutting-ring 31 increases the effective diameter of the tool. Altering physical structure by mechanical treatment.-The tool is used in a process for finishing close fits in workpieces of grey cast iron, light metal, bronze &c. The bores are first rough-machined and then work-hardened to a depth of one to three millimetres by rolling. After finish-machining with the tool, the surface irregularities are removed by finish rolling.
