Abstract
1301926 Electrophotographic element FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 25 Feb 1970 [25 Feb 1969] 9132/70 Heading H1K [Also in Division B2] An electrophotographic or electrostatic recording material is prepared by treating a surface of a non-metallic support such as paper, polyethylene terephthalate film, cellulose triacetate film, non-woven fabric, cloth or wood with an agent containing non-volatile ingredients at least 70% by weight of which are colloidal alumina and applying a waterdilutable or aqueous coating mixture to the treated surface and/or to the opposite surface to form an electrostatic recording layer or electrophotographic layer thereon. The treatment agent may be applied as an aqueous dispersion and may also contain inorganic or organic acid radicals, polyvinyl alcohol, styrene/ butadiene copolymer, butadiene/methylmethacrylate copolymer, colloidal silica, a moistureabsorbing inorganic salt or polyhydric compound, or a surfactant. The non-metallic substance may have a gelatine undercoating or may be clay or pigment coated paper such as art, machine-coated or baryta paper. An electrostatic recording material is obtained by spreading on the collodial alumina layer an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylic or methacrylic ester, alkyd resin or vinyl acetate/ ethyl acrylate copolymer, optionally containing colloidal silica, or an organic solvent solution of an insulating, water-insoluble resin. An electrophotographic sensitive layer is obtained by spreading a mixture of a photoconductive inorganic powder such as ZnO and a melamineformaldehyde resin, urea formaldehyde, acetic acid/vinylcrotonic acid copolymer, acrylic ester/ acrylic acid copolymer, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, vinyl acetate/crotonic acid copolymer, styrene/butadiene copolymer plus shellac, or an epoxy ester of dehydrated castor oil fatty acid. An electrophotographic layer may also be obtained by coating the treated support with polyvinyl carbazole in benzene or diphenyl chloride. In Example 2, an electrophotographic material prepared as above is coated on its rear surface with a water emulsion of polyvinyl acetate and carbon black. In Example 10, art paper is coated on one surface with the colloidal alumina dispersion and on its other surface first with 5% methanolic solution of maleic anhydride/vinyl acetate copolymer and then an electrophotographic layer. In Example 11, the non-art surface of art paper is coated with colloidal alumina and the art surface with an electrophotographic layer.
