Abstract
1,199,061. Photoconductive composition. GEVAERT-AGFA N.V. 1 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 19186/67. Heading H1K A photo-conductive recording layer comprises an inorganic photoconductor dispersed in a binder consisting of a mixture of binding agents which are not mutually soluble in the solid state wherein at least one agent is a polymer containing groups having the properties of a Lewis base and wherein at least another agent is a polymer containing gronps having the properties of a Lewis acid or a neutralized Lewis base or acid and wherein the layer has a porous structure. The cavities of the porous structure are not more than 50% of the volume of the layer, randomly distributed, microscopic and interconnected. The photoconductor may be ZnO and the layer is preferably coated on glassine paper to form an electrophotographic plate. In the specific embodiments the Lewis base polymer is polyvinylbutyral, a cellulose ether derivative, ethyl cellulose or copolyvinyl chloride-vinyl acetatemaleic anhydride whilst the other polymer is copolyvinyl acetate-vinyl laurate, but many other polymers of both types are specified. Acid butyl phosphate, tetrachlorophthalic anhydride and various sensitizing dyestuffs may be added. The recording layer is made by dispersing the photoconductor in a solution containing at least one organic solvent having dissolved therein at least polymers, coating the solution on a support and drying the coating at such a rate that at least a part of one of the polymers precipitates from the solvent before the other polymers and that on completion of drying, the dried coating contains randomly interconnected microscopic cavities. The polymers must not be soluble in water at pH 7, must be differentially soluble in the solvent, must form a clear solution and must be mutually insoluble in the solid state, thus giving a layer which has macroscopic heterogeneities that are detectable by the eye. It is preferred to use a mixture of sym.-dichloroethane, ethanol and cyclohexanone or ethyl methyl ketone, and to dry the coating in two stages, the first at a slow evaporation rate and the second at a much faster evaporation rate.
