1300937 Bituminous compositions RUBEROID Ltd 18 Sept 1970 [30 Sept 1969] 48081/69 Heading C3N [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A composition comprises (i) a thermoplastic material which is either bitumen, pitch or asphalt, (ii) a halogen donor defined as a halogen-containing material which evolves halogen or hydrogen halide at a temperature above that normally used in the processing of compositions containing bitumen, pitch or asphalt which is substantially stable at said processing temperature and being either (a) one or more of perchloropentacyclodecane C 10 Cl 2 or compounds of similar structure of the formulµ C 10 Cl 10 O, C 10 Cl 4 F 8 and C 15 H 2 O 3 SCl 12 , (b) a chlorinated rubber, or (c) an alkylbenzene containing two or more chlorine and/or bromine atoms as nuclear substituents, e.g. pentabromotoluene, and (iii) a finely divided material more than 50 wt. per cent of which consists of aluminium iron silicates and/or ferric oxide. The finely divided material may be pulverized fuel ash or fly ash, a naturally occurring mineral containing more than 50 wt. per cent aluminium iron silicate or pure ferric oxide. The composition suitably contains per 100 parts by weight of the bitumen, pitch or asphalt, 1-50, advantageously 4-20, and preferably 4-10, parts by weight of halogen donor, and 1-100, preferably 15-50, parts by weight of the finely divided material. When ferric oxide is used without any aluminium iron silicate it is suitably used in an amount 6-20, preferably 8-15, parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of bitumen, pitch or asphalt.
