Abstract

1300251 Vehicle washing apparatus F DINI 4 March 1970 [17 March 1969 (3) 1 July 1969] 10480/70 Heading B7J A car washing apparatus comprises an archway 1 which is mounted on rollers 5 so as to be movable along rails 6 and a horizontal rotatable cylindrical brush 4 which is mounted for vertical movement within the opening defined by the archway 1. The apparatus also comprises a rail 21, Figure 7, which extends across the top of the archway 1 and slopes downwardly from each archway support 2 towards the centre of the archway 1, and two generally vertical brushes 28, 28 which are mounted on carriages 26 provided with principal rollers 24 and secondary rollers 25 for movement along the rail 21. The carriages 26 of the brushes 28 have electric motors 27 for rotating the brushes in opposite directions. Movement of the brushes 28 away from the centre of the rail 21 is limited by brakes 29 and springs 30. The brushes 28 may be staggered one in front of the other so as to secure complete washing of the vehicle In a further embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the overlapping pair of rails 14 on which the carriages 15 ride are pivotally mounted on supports 2 at 16 and are joined at the point 17 at the centre of the archway 1 by means of metal plates 19. The pivotal mounting of the rails 14 allows these rails to occupy positions A and B, these positions being interchanged by means of an hydraulic piston 20. In a still further embodiment, described with reference to Figs. 10, 11 and 12 (not shown), movement of carriages (33) towards the centre of rails (31, 32) is limited by stops (43). The rails (31, 32) each comprise a flat plate (35) to which a T-section beam (36) is welded and the plates (35) are connected by a central plate (39) and the beams (36) each carry an internal brake (40) formed by a longitudinal bar having a concave upper surface supported by springs (41) which engage rollers (42) on carriages (33).
