Telephonic relays.-A series of vacuum-tube electric amplifiers are connected in cascade with interposed iron-core transformers, as described in the parent Specification, and a tuned circuit is provided at each stage of the amplification with the object of reinforcing only currents of a specified frequency. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement for wireless reception. The received oscillations are impressed on the grid-filament circuit of the tube 1, the plate circuit of which is coupled by a transformer 7 to the grid-circuit of the tube 2, and so on, the last tube 4 having a capacity 11 shunted by a resistance in its grid-circuit and consequently acting as a detector, giving a low-frequency current through the transformer 12 and telephone 10. The plate circuit of each tube includes the common battery 6. The transformer cores are provided with air-gaps, and the secondary of each transformer is shunted by a capacity 15, 16, 17, thus giving resonance for the desired frequency. The receiving-aerial is not tuned to this frequency, so that oscillations set up therein by atmospherics are not reinforced by the amplifiers. An arrangement similar to that of the tubes 1, 2, 3, may be employed for low-frequency amplification, the circuits connected to the grids being tuned to the frequency or pitch of the desired note. The highfrequency and low-frequency amplification may be combined in a wireless receiving-apparatus. The transformer cores are formed of laminµ of the shape .shown in Fig. 1 and divided transversely so as to leave an air-gap E. The primary coil consists of layers X, Z connected in series, the secondary coil Y being interposed between the coils X, Z.
