Correcting distortion in long lines by emphasizing speech currents of higher frequency. - Distortion of speech in long-distance telephony is corrected by the employment, at the transmitting or receiving station, of vacuum-tube amplifiers the circuits of which are arranged to emphasise the speech current components of higher frequency. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus arranged at the transmitting-station. A battery 7 and microphone 6 are in circuit with the primary of a transformer T<1>, the secondary of which is connected across the grid 3 and filament 4 of a vacuum-tube amplifier. The plate circuit of this tube feeds the grid circuit of a second tube through a transformer T<2>, and the plate circuit of the second tube feeds the line L through a transformer T<3>. Each transformer primary is shunted by an inductance 8 which gives preference of passage to the low-frequency speech components, the apparatus as a whole thus emphasizing the highfrequency components. Alternatively, the transformers may be constructed to take a large magnetizing-current, for example by providing an airgap in the magnetic circuits. When the amplifier is used at the receiving-station, the line-wires feed the primary of the transformer T<1>, and a telephone receiver is placed across the secondary of the transformer T<3>. In this case, small series condensers replace the shunt inductances 8; or the. primary circuits of the transformers may include a condenser and inductance, placed in parallel and proportioned to offer a greater impedance for low than for higher frequencies. The same set of vacuum tubes may be used for transmission and reception, a switch being arranged for making the necessary changes in the circuit connexions. This switch may also be arranged to change the transformation ratio of the transformers.
