Abstract

Telephonic relays. - High-frequency currents, such as are usad in wireless telegraphy and telephony, are amplified by vacuum-tube relays in combination with iron-core transformers, the transformation ratios of which are of determined values calculated from the constants of the vacuum tubes and their circuits. In order to prevent arcing in the tubes, the potentials of certain elements of the relay, for example, the transformer coils and cores, are fixed by connecting them to points on the supply battery. Fig. 3 shows a pair of vacuum tubes 1 arranged for a double amplification, the input circuit being connected across the primary of the transformer T', the secondary of which is connected to the grid 3 and filament 4 of the first tube. The plate circuit of this tube includes a source P and the primary coil of a transformer T<2>, the secondary being connected to the grid 3 and filament 4 of the second tube, the plate circuit of which is supplied by the same current source P and is connected by a transformer T<3> to the receiver circuit R. Each tube has four characteristic constants, viz. : the rates of change of the grid current when the plate potential is constant and the grid potential is slightly varied, and when the grid potential is constant and the plate potential is varied ; and the corresponding rates of change of the plate current. The transformation ratios are calculated in terms of these constants and of the resistances of the receiver circuit R and the input circuit, in such a way as to obtain the maximum relay effect, i.e. the maximum ratio of energy liberated in the receiver circuit R to energy consumed in the input circuit. The potential of the transformer cores M<1>, M<2>, M<3> and of one primary terminal of the transformer T<1> is determined by connexions to any point. of the battery P. The metal parts of the telephone receiver in the circuit R may be connected to the positive pole of the battery P. One form of transformer is shown in Fig. 4, in which the core is formed of two side members c and three cross-members a, b, the coils being wound around the central cross-member a, The cross-section of the parts b, c is equal to, or greater than, that of the central part a, so as to reduce the flux density in the external portions of the magnetic circuit. The primary coil Y is intermediate the two sections X, Z of the secondary coil, and a space e is left between the outside of the coil X and the core arm b. The coils may be formed of successive cylindrical strata several millimeters apart, and each stratum may consist of two layers of similar wire connected in parallel so as to reduce the resistance without increasing the capacity. The core is built up of thin sheets of silicon iron or of iron annealed in vacuo. The transformers may be placed in copper or aluminium casings to avoid magnetic leakage from one transformer to another, and the potential of these casings may be defined.
