Abstract

1300015 Vertically adjustable chairs AMERICAN HOSPITAL SUPPLY CORP 23 July 1971 [16 Feb 1971] 34718/71 Heading A4J [Also in Division F2] The base of a dentist's chair which may be raised manually or by transmission of power from a reversible motor 24 and locked against downward movement, comprises an upper frame 17 secured to the underside of the chair 11, a lower frame resting on, or secured to the floor, a pair of laterally spaced, inter-connected sets of linkage mechanisms 23a, (23b), Fig.4 (not shown) connected to the upper and lower frames and to a member 33 having a threaded bore through which a screw shaft 32 passes such that rotation of the screw shaft causes the member 33 to move axially along the shaft thereby expanding or contracting the linkage mechanisms which causes the chair to be raised or lowered. The screw shaft 32 is connected to the output shaft of the motor through a one-way clutch 35 and a reduction gear assembly 34, the one-way clutch allowing rotation of the screw shaft in the direction in which the chair is raised when the motor is de-energized thereby allowing for manual lifting of the chair and the reduction gearing preventing rotation of the shaft in the direction in which the chair is lowered when the motor is de-energized thereby locking the seat against downward movement. Lowering of the chair is effected by reversing the motor such that screw shaft 32 rotates, the chair exerting an axial force on member 33 thereby tending to increase the speed of rotation of shaft 32 which is limited or braked by the speed of the power-driven motor shaft 31 and output shaft 38.
