Abstract

1348228 Power-operated pedestal tables AMERICAN HOSPITAL SUPPLY CORP 19 June 1972 [26 July 1971] 28504/72 Heading A4H A power-operated pedestal table comprises a base 11, an angularly adjustable table top (13) and a column 12 extending between the base and top, the column being hollow and including upper and lower telescoping sections 12a, 12b, a reversible electric motor 17 mounted in lower section 12b and operatively connected to a screw shaft 19 extending into the upper section 12a, and a safety one-way clutch assembly mounted in said upper section 12a, said assembly including a horizontal plate 24 secured to the upper section 12a and having an opening (27) through which shaft 19 extends, and a nut 29 threadedly carried by the shaft beneath the plate, the plate providing a non-circular recess 28 on its underside normally receiving the nut and restraining rotation thereof on rotation of the shaft, the nut being withdrawn from the recess until it is free to rotate with the shaft by continued rotation of the shaft in a direction for lowering the top when downward movement of the top is blocked by an obstruction thereby releasing the top against further downward movement until the obstacle is removed. Nut 29 has an upper guide sleeve 30 and is urged upwardly into recess 28 by a helical compression spring 34 via an anti-friction thrust bearing 31 and a thrust plate 32. Plate 32 may be replaced by a sleeve on nut 29. Motor 17 is operated by pedals 15, (16) and is connected to shaft 19 by pulleys 21-22 and belt 23 or gears or chain and sprockets.
