Abstract
1298341 Steering semi-trailers R BUTLER 12 March 1970 [12 March 1969] 12975/69 Heading B7H In a semi-trailer having a pair of axles 2, 4, carrying steerable wheels, a king-pin 36 for entering a socket in a fifth wheel coupling on a tractor vehicle is rotatably mounted in a baseplate 32 by means of a bearing 34 and has connected thereto at the top end a linkage for steering the wheels on the axles 2, 4 and at the bottom end a locating means for preventing the king-pin from rotating relative to the fifth wheel coupling. A lever 40 secured to the bottom end of the king-pin 36 has a lug 42 for engaging the entry slot in the fifth wheel coupling. A lever 44 secured to the top end of the king-pin 36 carries a sliding coupling 48 engaging a slot 50 in a bell-crank lever 26. Three-armed levers 21, 22 mounted on the axles 2, 4 and linked through rods 12, 20, 28 and levers 14, 24 to the bell-crank lever 26 are connected by sliding joints 10 to track rods 6, 8 extending between steerable stub axles at the ends of the axles 2, 4. The position of the sliding coupling 48 on the lever 44 may be adjustable for varying the steering ratio.
