Abstract

1298040 Boots &c CLARKS Ltd 21 Oct 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 50335/70 Heading A3B [Also in Division B6] A method of making a shoe upper includes the steps of cutting the upper 10 from leather or from a sheet of material whereof at least the surface layer is made from a plastics material, e.g. plastic coated fabric or synthetic poromeric material; and forming an embossed pattern on the surface of the upper 10 by pressing it against an embossing tool to the raised portions of which an ink or dye has been applied, and heating the upper. In this way the upper becomes impregnated with the ink or dye in the impressed lines 11 or areas between the raised portions 12. The embossing tool may be an etched zinc embossing plate which forms one electrode of a high frequency heating device. The ink or dye, e.g. a pvc ink, is applied to the raised portions of the embossing plate by a pad or roller.
