Abstract
1297862 Pumping apparatus TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 26 May 1970 [2 June 1969 25314/70 Heading F1A A pumping apparatus comprises first (pilot) 58 and second 64 fluid sources, the first fluid source being pressurized at a constant flow by a pump 96, a first fluid variable volume container 80 and a second fluid container 78 of fixed volume, the containers being connected to the sources, the one for the first fluid passing through a high flow resistance means 72 to establish a constant flow and the apparatus functioning such that pressurized first fluid flows into container 80 to pump the second fluid from container 78. The containers 78, 80 may be connected to their fluid sources through a manually or automatically operable changeover valve 62 having a discharge conduit 106. The first fluid source 58 is fed from an adjacent chamber 56, also connected to valve 62, chamber 58 being under a partial vacuum and having a bleed 102. An additional pair of containers for first and second fluids 90, 88 are provided in an adjacent chamber 54 holding all the containers 78, 80, 90, 88 under pilot fluid (silicone oil), the three chambers 54, 56, 58 being surrounded by a temperature control bath 60. A pressure relief valve 104 is provided in chamber 58 and chambers 54, 58 have agitators 107, 108. The changeover valve is movable, in use, between two positions such that the containers, sources and the discharge conduit are linked to pump the second fluid continuously from the apparatus. In a first position pump 96 pushes first fluid through conduit 70, the valve 60, conduit 84 to container 80 so pumping second fluid from container 78 through conduit 82, valve 62 to discharge conduit 106. At the same time, suction produced by valve 96 draws first fluid from container 90 through conduit 94, 74 to chamber 56, the reduction in volume of container 90 drawing second fluid from source 64 through conduits 68, 92. In a second position of the valve, the conduit connections to the valve 62 are changed over, the pairs of conduits, 70 and 94, 68 and 82, 84 and 74, 92 and 106 are inter-connected to allow continued fluid-flow from the apparatus. Other fluid containers using the first fluid as a pilot fluid may be added to chamber 54, other conduits passing through the changeover valve 62 and high flow resistance means e.g. 116 may also be provided. The apparatus may be used in automatic blood sample analysis equipment.
