Abstract

1351900 Perforating BENDIX CORP 1 May 1972 [30 April 1971] 20188/72 Heading B3W [Also in Division F1] An apparatus for producing a high pressure jet of liquid for cutting comprises a pair of differential piston intensifiers 10, 12, Fig. 1, a pair of valves 14, 16, for directing low pressure operating fluid to chambers above the pistons 18, 20, a source 134 from which a different working fluid is supplied to the chambers below pistons 30, 32, and control means for alternately supplying operating fluid to the intensifiers with sufficient overlap to ensure full pressurization of both intensifiers during each cycle so that fluctuations in pressure of working fluid are avoided. The operating and working fluids are oil and water respectively. Slide valves 14, 16 supply operating fluid from a source 46 to either the chambers above pistons 18, 20 or to a sump 74. The slides are moved by the operating fluid through ports 114, 118, 116, 120 which are opened and closed by the pistons 18, 20 at such times as to provide the required overlap of pressurization. A starting valve 126 ensures that the slides are in the correct starting positions. High pressure working fluid passes from chambers 38, 40 to a surge vessel 160 and a jet 162.
