1297740 Axial-flow pumps SOC NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION and COMMISARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 April 1971 [1 April 1970] 25007/71 Heading F1C [Also in Division H2] A turbo molecular pump has a vertical axis and comprises within a stationary housing 10 a rotary system composed of a pump rotor 16 and of the rotating assembly 94, 96 of a driving motor 36. The pump essentially includes a device for supporting and centering the rotary system which comprises two magnetic half bearings 54, 54<SP>1</SP> placed on each side of the rotor in the axial direction and a mechanical thrust bearing 38, 38<SP>1</SP> which supports the rotary system and is placed beneath the rotor. The lower end of the shaft 34 is attached to the lower portion of a motor sleeve 96, which is placed beneath the rotor, and extends through the sleeve with radial play. The lower opening 12 provides a connection with a pipe for discharging gases to a primary vacuum source.
