Abstract
1297637 Continuous casting INLAND STEEL CO 25 Nov 1969 [26 Nov 1968 4 Aug 1969] 57726/69 Heading B3F In a continuous casting process melt is introduced into a vertical mould 24 through a submerged nozzle 21 having outlet apertures 23. The melt flow in the mould is so established that the melt is directed outwardly and upwardly from the mould axis to impinge and flow upwardly along the mould walls 24 to remove inclusions from the cast billet's surface and further to flow inwardly over the surface of the melt in the mould to form a standing wave w and a trough t in which the inclusive impurities are collected. Several nozzles are disclosed having peripheral spaced apertures (e.g. 23). When casting a rectangular sectioned billet the apertures are preferably arranged to direct the bulk of inflowing metal over the broad faces of the billet. Square-sectioned billets may also be cast. The examples disclose the casting of aluminium alloy slabs.
