The cards fall through the cage into the carton and are stacked on a platform 22 which is lowered as the stack forms by a motor 23 in response to pulses from a card counter; When the required member of cards (e.g. 2000) is stacked, the counter actuates an hydraulic cylinder A to move blades 31 over the stack to receive following cards, and also actuates a cylinder C to further lower the platform 22 until the bottom of the stack is behind a stop 32 on the carton. The cylinder C also operates a switch 33 to actuate a cylinder B to withdraw the platform 22 from the stack, and the cylinder B also operates a switch 41 to index the chain 5 to remove the carton from the loading position and move an empty carton thereto. The switch 41 also actuates a cylinder D to raise the platform 22 to a level some way below the blades. Cylinder B then moves the platform 22 to a position beneath the blades. Cylinder is then actuated to raise the platform 22 into the cage 4 to a position just below the blades. When a predetermined number of cards (e.g. 150) arestacked on the blades; the counter actuates the cylinder A to withdraw the blades, and the cards fall on to the platform 22; which is thenlowered under control of the pulses supplied to the motor 23, and the process is repeated.
