Abstract

1296957 Removing SO 2 from gases CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP 28 May 1971 18033/71 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from waste gas by scrubbing the gas with aqueous Na 2 SO 3 , adding MgO and or Mg(OH) 2 to at least a portion of the resulting NaHSO 3 solution to precipitate MgSO 3 , recycling the regenerated Na 2 SO 3 solution together with any untreated portion, reacting the MgSO 3 with carbon to form MgO and sulphur vapour, and recycling the MgO. The waste gas may be flue gas or H 2 SO 4 off-gas. If it contains SO 3 , MgSO 4 is also formed. Entrained fly ash may be separated after scrubbing. The MgSO 3 may be heated with coal or coke at 400-900‹ C. The sulphur vapour may be condensed or scrubbed with solvent.
