Abstract

1296688 Laminates UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 Nov 1969 [21 Nov 1968] 56802/69 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A laminate comprises a resilient threedimensional network 20 of bonded fibres has (as shown in Fig. 2) the form of a pattern of elevations 24 separated by a pattern of depressions 26, each of the elevations having a dome 30 whose cap wall unit weight is less than the average web unit weight laminated to fabric, paper or other material. The network may be produced by passing a corded web of unbonded crimped staple fibres between rows of cog teeth on cylinders. Successive rows of teeth are displaced by one-half pitch. As shown in Fig. 7, the unbonded web 34 is passed between cog teeth 78 on a cylinder 74 and co-operating cog teeth on satellite rolls 80. The satellite rolls are all driven by a common chain 90 and individual rolls may be brought into or out of co-operation with the cylinder 74. The web is carried between the cog teeth by an endless conveyer 100 consisting of narrow belts which run between the rows of cog teeth. After forming, a binder is incorporated in the network by spraying; in the use of thermoplastic fibres bonding is by heating. The fibres may be hogs' hair, cotton, sisal, hemp, nylon, rayon, acetate, polyester, acrylonitrile polymers, polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride-polyvinyl chloride copolymers or glass.
