Abstract

1294800 Sharpening machine cutters in situ MASCHINENFABRIK MOENUS AG 24 June 1971 [9 Sept 1970] 29717/71 Heading B3D A machine for cutting a workpiece comprises a belt knife 1, a grinding arrangement having at least one drivable grinding element 3, 4 movable into and out of an operative position in which the element contacts the cutting edge of the knife, sensing means 8 responsive to movement of the knife transverse of its longitudinal direction, and means actuable by the sensing means sensing such transverse movement exceeding a predetermined amount for displacing the grinding element out of its operative position. The knife runs over pulleys 2 and has its edge ground by two grinding discs 3, 4 which rotate in opposite directions and are engaged with the knife by rotation of a hand wheel 5 acting through links 6, 7. The sensing means consists of a grooved roller 8 which acts through a control valve 9 upon transverse movement of the knife to operate an hydraulic toothed rack drive connected to the hand wheel 5 to retract the discs 3, 4 from engagement with the knife. In other embodiments, the sensing means consists of a photo-cell, or pneumatic sensor. When the main drive motors for the knife is started or stopped, a control device (11, Fig. 3, not shown) acts to advance or retract, respectively, the grinding discs into and out of engagement with the knife, the device being actuated by an electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic pulse. The pulse may also be used to stop and start the drive to the grinding discs and the drive for the knife.
