Abstract

1294400 Making heat exchangers; stamping UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS Inc 19 Nov 1970 [30 Dec 1969] 55070/70 Headings B3A and B3Q Minimal contact resistance to heat transfer at the interface between a tube 10 and an annular corrugated fin 13 is achieved by inserting the annular fin inside the tube and then placing the tube in an electromagnetic forming coil 21 which applies a radial force to deform the tube to conform with the surface irregularities of the annular fin. In the described embodiment the annular fin is formed about an inner tube 11 before being inserted in the outer tube 10. A non- conductive adapter 22 is provided for receiving and guiding the preformed assembly of inner and outer tubes and the annular fin into the electromagnetic coil 21. In another embodiment minimal contact resistance to heat transfer at the interface between the fin and the inner tube 11 is achieved by inserting an electromagnetic coil, having an expansion effect, into the inner tube.
