Abstract
1294147 Ingot casting machines; mould linings and jackets; composite casting F KOCKS 21 May 1970 [23 June 1969 13 Aug 1969] 24746/70 Heading B3F Metal to form an ingot is teemed from a tundish 11 through a spout 12 with a spatter head 13 into a vertical mould 14. The mould is immediately capped, after pouring, e.g. by insertion of a plug or by a water spray, and tilted to lie in a horizontal position. In Fig. 1, the mould 14 is lowered on a platform 19 during pouring to maintain a constant distance between the molten metal surface in the mould and the spatter head 13. After capping and pouring, the spout 12 is removed and the mould 14 raised between roller guides 21, 22 until its bottom lies adjacent a horizontal roller bed 36. The roller guide part 21 is pivoted at 23 to lower the mould 14 on to the roller bed 36 where it is slowly rotated. A plunger ejector 40 removes the solidified ingot 43 from the mould whilst still hot. Hollow ingots can be made by partially filling the mould and rotating the mould in its horizontal position and/or pouring position at high speed to subject the ingot to centrifugal force. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5) four moulds are carried on a turntable 51. A hoist 24, 54-56, lifts a mould 14 to a pouring spout 12 at a casting station and lowers the mould during teeming on to the turntable 51. After 90 degrees rotation of the turntable 51 the mould 14 is lifted to an extraction and rotation station in a carriage 63. At a station directly opposed to the extraction and rotation station a fresh mould (not shown) is prepared and lowered on to the turntable. Mould linings and jackets.-In Fig. 2 a squaresectioned 2-part ingot mould is shown having a paper or plastics lining to retard cooling of the ingot. A cylindrical jacket 39 having two parts is clamped around the mould for mould rotation. Composite casting.-A thin metal liner 42 may be provided in the mould 39, the liner forming the surface of the cast ingot.
