1293962 Pipe couplings S M HAWES 15 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970] 2261/70 Heading F2G In a pivotal joint such as between a pipe 1 fixed on land and a pipe 2 attached to a floating pontoon, a steel bellows unit 4 having flanges 5 at each end is sealingly secured by bolts to flanges 6, 7 of the pipes, the bolts 16 connecting flanges 5, 6 being fracturable under a longitudinal force. A box structure 9 is rigidly affixed to pipe 2 and carries laterally extending pins 10 which engage the ends of slots 12 in plates 11 fast with the fixed pipe 1. Pins 13 on the box structure 9 are positioned behind plates 14 on plates 11 to prevent withdrawal of pins 10 from the ends of slots 12. Links 17 connect bolts 16 to the pins 10. The box 9 also carries a further pair of laterally extending pins 15 positioned such that at the highest desired position of the pipe 2 above the plane of the paper, the pins 15 just abut plates 11. At this position, the pins 13 are no longer behind the plates 14 and the bellows unit 4 is bent to the maximum desired angle. If the pipe 2 rises further, the pins 15 now act as a fulcrum, pins 10 slide along slots 12 and links 17 are pulled to shear bolts 16 to break the coupling between flanges 5 and 6. The plates 11 are protected by a removable plate (18), Fig. 1 (not shown). The bellows may be provided internally at its ends with conical guides to concentrate the fluid flow centrally. The pins 10 may be rotatably affixed to links 17.
