Abstract

1293454 Cubically crystalline zirconium dioxide DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 5 March 1970 [6 March 1969] 10738/70 Heading C1A A process for the preparation of cubic ZrO 2 comprises separating particulate monoclinic ZrO 2 from a ZrO 2 /SiO 2 mixture by flotation, treating the monoclinic ZrO 2 , either whilst moist or after drying, with hydrofluoric acid to reduce the SiO 2 content, mixing the monoclinic ZrO 2 with 6À5 to 13 mol. per cent of one or more of CaO, MgO, Y 2 O 3 , ThO 2 or Ce 2 O 3 in particulate form or with a particulate substance which during heating forms the oxide, e.g. hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonates, oxalates or acetates and heating the mixture to from 1000‹ to 2000‹ C. to effect a solid state reaction to form cubic ZrO 2 .
