1293439 Wells &c ROCKWELL MFG CO 4 Sept 1970 [1 Oct 1969] 42366/70 Heading E1F A well pipe hanger 10 (Fig. 6) carries a resilient split-ring 30 having parts 38 which engages recesses 54 in a tubular well member such as a well head 58, when the ring expands, the ring moving axially relative to the hanger so that part 14 holds the parts in the recesses to support the hanger. Initially the ring is held radially contracted and against axial movement by lips 42, 18 on the ring and the hanger respectively, projections 37 on the ring disengaging the lips as the. hanger enters the wellhead. During cementing, fluid passes up the annulus 56 and through fluted area 22, between parts 37 and through holes 40. In a modification the ring 130 (Fig. 7) is held contracted by pins (not shown) projecting from a carrier 160 on the body to engage the ends of the ring. The pins are disengaged to permit the ring to expand by a latch 164 on the carrier engaging the recesses 154 as the hanger moves downwardly. A hanger supporting casing is hung on lower recesses and a hanger supporting tubing is hung on an upper recess in a tubular well member, the shapes of the recesses and latches ensuring that the hangers are hung in the respective recesses. Upper and lower sets of recesses permit a tubing string attached to a packer to be tensioned, the latches on the hanger 1 supporting the string freeing the ring as the hanger passes the lower set of recesses, and the string being raised and tensioned to permit the ring to engage the upper set of recesses.
