Abstract

1293074 Reduced block copolymers SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 15 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969] 43943/70 Heading C3P Non-linear block copolymers are prepared by (i) coupling a block copolymer of the type (polybutadiene-polyisoprene) n having a lithium atom at one end of the chain (where n is 1 to 8) with a coupling agent which is a diester of a monohydric alcohol or phenol and a dicarboxylic acid or a compound having at least three reactive sites capable of reacting with the carbonlithium bond, the coupling agent being used in an amount of 0À1 to 2 equivalents per g. atom of Li in the polymer, and (ii) reducing at least 50% of the unsaturation in the polymer by hydrogenation. The coupling agents mentioned are those described in Specifications 1,205,532 and 985,614. The example describes the use of diethyl adipate. Preferred hydrogenation catalysts are those obtained by combining a carboxylate or alkoxide of Co or Ni with an aluminium hydrocarbyl compound, e.g. nickel octanoate and triethyl aluminium.
