Abstract

A process for the preparation of a nonlinear block copolymer having polyethylene blocks and ethylene-propylene copolymer blocks, comprising (a) coupling a block copolymer having polymer chains expressed by the formula (polybutadiene-polyisoprene) n with a lithium atom at one end of the polymer chains, where n is an integer from 1 to 8, using a coupling agent, which is a diester of a monovalent alcohol and a polycarboxylic acid, or a compound having at least 3 reactive spots capable of reacting with carbon-lithium bonds, in a proportion of between 0.1 and 2 equivalents, with respect to the lithium present in the block copolymer, and (b) hydrogenating the coupled product to reduce its unsaturation by at least fifty%.
