Abstract

1493753 Dimers of heptadienoic acid esters SCHERING AG 14 April 1976 [19 April 1975 8 April 1976] 15245/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Heptadienoic acid esters are dimerized using a basic catalyst comprising an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal; an alcoholate, hydride, amide or tritylate of an alkali metal; or an alcoholate, hydride or amide of an alkaline earth metal to give isomeric products of formula Temperatures of -20‹ to 180‹ C. may be used according to the particular catalyst. Examples describe the dimerization of n-heptadiene-trans- 2-cis-5 and n-heptadiene-trans-4,6-acid methyl esters. The products are suitable as drying oils, and may be reacted with maleic anhydride polyols, polyamines, polymerized or copolymerized with styrene, or hydrogenated to the saturated products.
