Abstract

1,271,045. Hydrogenated coupled polymers. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 19 Oct., 1970 [20 Oct., 1969], No. 49474/70. Heading C3P. Hydrogenated conjugated diene polymers or copolymers containing at least one interchain group -C-X- having a bond energy of at least 45 kilocalories per mole, where X is Si, Ge, Sn, N, P, As or Sb, are prepared by (1) forming a living polymer by solution polymerization with a mono- or poly-functional alkali metalcontaining initiator; (2) coupling the living polymer chains by using a polyhalogen compound of the element X; and (3) hydrogenating the coupled product in solution in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst comprising the reaction product of an aluminium alkyl with a nickel or cobalt compound. An example describes a hydrogenated two-block styrene/ butadiene copolymer prepared by block polymerization in mixed cyclohexane-diethyl ether in the presence of sec. butyl lithium coupling the living polymer with SiCl 4 , and hydrogenating in the presence of aluminium triisobutyl/nickel acetylacetonate. The butadiene block was 43% of 1.2-structure.
