Abstract
1343940 Polymerization of dienes FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 24 Aug 1971 [11 Sept 1970] 39752/71 Heading C3P A conjugated diene is polymerized by means of an alkali metal or organo-alkali metal catalyst in the presence of dimethyl ether in an amount equal to at least 10 parts by weight per 100 parts of monomer, the temperature being kept at not more than 120‹ F. and preferably at about 40‹ F., primarily by refluxing the ether at an appropriate rate. Comonomers and/or other solvents or catalyst modifiers may also be present. The return of the cooled, condensed ether may be stopped at 60-90% conversion, allowing the temperature to rise to 120‹ F. so that the ether is driven off as the polymerization is completed. Examples describe polymerization of butadiene (predominantly by 1, 2 addition), isoprene, piperylene and butadiene plus isoprene catalysed by n-butyl lithium, n-butyl sodium, amyl potassium, sodium naphthalene, lithium or sodium.
