Abstract
1,231,657. Polybutadiene block polymers. INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO. Ltd. 12 July, 1968 [14 July, 1967; 25 March, 1968], Nos. 33348/68 and 33347/68. Heading C3P. A tyre tread or tyre tread stock comprises a vulcanized rubber derived from a block polymer of butadiene having at least two blocks (A) and (B), the first block (A) containing less than 20% 1,2 structure and at least one other block (B) containing more than 30% 1,2 structure, the proportion of block (A) being in the range 5- 95% by weight of the polymer. The polymer may be prepared by polymerizing butadiene in the presence of an alkali metal or organo alkali metal catalyst and at predetermined times during the polymerization adding to the active polymerization system at least one polar compound. In the examples, block polymers of butadiene are prepared by reaction in hexane using as a catalyst, lithium butyl, or a lithium or a sodium dispersion, the polar compound added being ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, tetramethyl ethylene diamine or diethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The product mixture is treated with an antioxidant and methanol, and the polymer vulcanized.
