1291881 Pneumatic picking motions HINDLE SON & CO Ltd 20 Aug 1970 [23 Aug 1969] 42134/69 Heading D1E In a pneumatic picking motion, the picking stick is connected to an eye 3 on a piston rod 2 of piston 1, compressed air is supplied through a joint 8 to a storage container 7 having a volume equal to the swept volume of the piston 1, and air flow to the storage chamber, from the storage chamber to the cylinder 4, and exhaust from the cylinder to the atmosphere is controlled by servo-controlled poppet valves 10, 14 and 12 respectively. Servo-cylinders 10c, 12c, 14c on the valves 10, 12, 14 are controlled by compressed air from a slide valve 19 which in turn is operated by a solenoid 19c. Solenoid 19c (24a on Figs 5a- 5d is controlled by a switch (23a) or 28a, Fig. 5c, operated by a cam (22) Fig. 5a (not shown) on a half speed shaft, there being two such switches corresponding to picking apparatus on each side of the loom. Alternatively, there may be only one switch (28a), Fig. 5b (not shown) operated by a cam (28) on the loom crankshaft, and a further switch (26) in the solenoid circuit controlled by a pattern chain (25) Fig. 5b may be used for pick-at-will weaving. In further embodiments, Figs. 5c, and 5d (not shown) there may be switches 32a-32b (33a), (33b) in solenoid 24a, 24b circuits controlled by the shuttle box swell. The cylinder 4 is mounted on trunion 6t bearings, Fig. 8, and the piston rod 2 may be connected to a lever system, Fig. 8, which compensates for the uneven thrust of the piston over its stroke, to produce a substantially constant pull on lug strap 39, which is connected to the picking stick. A cam 50 attached to crank lever 35, Fig 8, may open a switch 27 in the solenoid circuit to initiate refilling of container 7 immediately piston 1 reaches the end of its stroke.
