1291570 Non-woven fabric COURTAULDS Ltd 6 March 1970 [7 March 1969] 12119/69 Heading D1R A non-woven fabric comprises a plurality of plies of substantially parallel lengths of bundles of crimped continuous filaments, the bundles are twistless or have up to 1 turn per inch of twist. The bundles of one ply are cross laid on the bundles of an adjacent ply with the filaments of crossed lengths being entangled. One fabric can be formed by winding one or more filament bundles onto a rotor under tension so as to temporarily reduce the crimp, the winding being conducted to produce crossing helices, relaxing the tension in the wound bundles (e.g. by collapsing the rotor) so that the filaments resume their crimp and crossing bundles entangle. The fabric can also be made by over-end winding with the collection twist neutralising twist in the filament bundle to produce twistless bundles in the plies. The fabric can also be made by the looping device disclosed in Specification 1,042,134. The formed fabric can be left in its tubular shape or can be slit to form a flat fabric. The filament bundles can be spaced to form a net like fabric or can be closed to entangle along their lengths and produce a batt-like fabric. The filaments can be made of polyethylene terephthalate, poly (ethylene terephthalate/isophthalate), polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaproamide, cellulose diacetate, cellulose triacetate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile or acrylonitrile copolymers. The fabric can be bonded with a solution or emulsion of acrylate or methacrylate ester polymer or copolymer, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride. The adhesive can be applied by printing.
