A rope comprises a core 1, Fig. 1, of parallel rope yarns 3 bound together by a spirally wound tape 2, a concentric layer of parallel rope yarns, 4 bound together by a spirally wound tape of opposite twist to that of the tape 2, and at least one further concentric layer of parallel rope yarns 6, Fig. 2, bound together by a spirally wound tape 7 of opposite twist to that of the tape next below it, each rope yarn consisting of a number of continuous synthetic linear polymeric filaments twisted together with a very low degree 'of twist. Around the final layer of rope yarns two spirally wound tapes 7, 8, of opposite twist may be applied. The resulting rope may be coated in polyvinyl chloride or rubber. The synthetic linear polymeric filaments may be of:- polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyethylene terephthalate, stereospecific polypropylene, poly-epsilon caprolactam, polykappa-aminoundecanoic acid, linear polyethylene. The tapes 2, 5, 7, 8 may be of fabric woven from yarn consisting of a synthetic linear polymeric filament, for example, polyhexamethylene adipamide, and are bonded in position by adhesive. The angle between the spiral of the tapes and the axis of the rope is preferably such that each tape only covers less than 50% of the surface area that it surrounds. According to the Provisional Specification the density of the rope may be adjusted by the inclusion of additional materials, such as polyvinyl chloride, synthetic rubber and natural rubber so that the rope may sink or float.
