Abstract

1291528 Valve gear; regulating NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 28 July 1970 [30 July 1969 8 Sept 1969] 36440/70 Heading F1B A motor vehicle I.C. engine has a cam-shaft 22, Fig. 1, which is axially adjustable by hydraulic piston-and-cylinder arrangement 38, 34, to cause rocker arm 14 of engine exhaust valve 12 to be selectively actuated by a cam 30 or a cam 32. During low-speed, low-load engine operation, a manifold-vacuum-operated switch (68), Fig.3 (not shown) and a series-connected engine-speedresponsive switch (76) are both closed, so that a solenoid-actuated valve 58 is energized and assumes the position shown. Thus, pressurized fluid delivered through passage 46 is drained through open passage 48 thereby causing the camshaft 22 to be held by spring 44 in the position shown in which the rocker arm 14 is actuated by cam 30 to open the exhaust valve 50 degrees after B.D.C. and close it at T.D.C. During high-speed and/or high-load engine operation, the solenoid is de-energized so that the valve 58 closes, whereby the pressurized fluid forces piston 38 and cam-shaft 22 to the left to cause the cam 32 to become effective and open the exhaust valve 50 degrees before B.D.C. and close it 10 degrees after T.D.C. Similarly, the cam-shaft may have a pair of cams for engine inlet valve control, whereby the inlet valve is opened 10 degrees before T.D.C. and closed at 50 degrees after B.D.C.. during high engine speed and/or load, and is opened at T.D.C. and closed slightly before 50 degrees after B.D.C. during low engine speed and load.
