Abstract

129,094. Shepherd, J. July 2, 1918. Armatures and field magnets, cooling; coils and conductors; cores ; insulation.-Comprises improvements in hollow liquid-cooled coil-supports such as are described in Specification 109,294, and also a method of insulating the conductors carried by such supports. The coil-support for the end connectors consists of a conical framework A, Fig. 1, of gun-metal, hard brass, or other suitable metal with keyways k engaging with keys 8 of the stator stampings. The support A is provided with spiral recesses r, Fig. 2, the sides of which are formed by projections n cast with, or attached to, the support A. Each recess may take a number of connectors, or a separate recess may be provided for each connector. An outer coil support A', formed with spiral recesses on its inner surface to take the outer connectors, is secured to the coil-supports A by set-screws d. The recesses on the support A<1> are formed by projections n<1> cast with, or attached to, the support A', or secured to the projections n. The projections n, n<1> are formed of non-magnetic metal, or of vulcanised fibre, hard wood, &c. The coil-supports A, A<1> are cooled by internal water ducts h provided with diaphragms g for distributing the water uniformly. The supports A, A<1> are preferably cast with the walls and diaphragms g in one piece, and the cover-plates b on which the connectors rest secured thereto by welding or brazing. The coil supports may be formed in one piece or in sections secured together by bolts. Liquid-cooled coil-supports B are also provided, built into the stator core and formed with keyways and winding slots corresponding to those of the stator core disks. These consist of brass rings B<1>, side plates B<2>, and rings B<3> serving as distance-pieces, all welded or soldered together. A strip g‹ is welded to a side plate to form flow and return passages h<o> for the cooling-liquid. The spiral end connectors are embedded in an insulating-substance, which can be vulcanized or cured, or moulded into an impervious jointless mass by introducing steam into the ducts h. The insulating-substance may consist of an insulating-fabric and vulcanizing rubber.
