Abstract

109,294. Shepherd, J. Sept. 5, 1916. Armatures and field-magnets, cooling; coils and conductors; cores.-Hollow liquid cooled coil supports, such as annular rings for the stator and rotor windings of dynamoelectric machines, are provided with mechanical attachments by which they are secured to the stator or rotor, and are formed with teeth or their equivalent corresponding with the core teeth so as to afford uniform support to the windings and their end connexions. The coil support A at each end of the stator is divided into flow and return ducts a<1>, a<2>, Fig. 3, the liquid entering and leaving through the pipes j<1>, k<1>. The support is secured to the stator by keys 3, 4. The external conical surface on which the end coils 6 rest is formed with teeth f<1>, f<2>, Fig. 4, and the coils are firmly held between the teeth by clamping-rings g, g<1>. Hollow coil supports B, also having flow and return ducts and pipe connexions, are inserted between the core disks, and are provided with keys for attachment to the stator and with teeth on the inner periphery corresponding with the stator teeth. The rotor end coils 13 are supported on metal hubs C, which form with the rotor body 10 hollow spaces c<1>, through which cooling-liquid is circulated. Teeth corresponding with the rotor teeth are formed on the hubs C. The hubs C are secured in position by screwthreads c<3>, caulked or welded joints c<7>, and setscrews c<8>. The annular spaces c<1> are connected together by holes n<2> drilled in the solid rotor core, and are connected with central ducts n, n<4> in the shaft by radial ducts n<1>, n<3>. The liquid from the duct n<4> is discharged into a chamber r through radial passages p<1>. The liquid enters the duct n through an inlet pipe fixed rigidly in position. The flow of liquid is regulated by valves or cocks. The liquid may be cooled and re-used. In a modification of the stator coil support as applied to involute connectors arranged in layers, a number of annular supports D<1>, Figs. 13 and 14, are employed at each end of the stator, each support being flat on one side and formed with projections d<5>, d<6>, d<7> shaped to suit the form of end connectors. As an alternative to the rotor end-coil support, annular recesses may be formed in the rotor forging 10 and closed by steel end-rings.
