Abstract
1290279 Chain tensioning devices G WINKLHOFER and O WINKLHOFER [trading as JO H WINKLHOFER & SOHNE] 11 June 1971 [19 June 1970 16 Nov 1970] 27434/71 Heading F2Q In an I.C. engine cam-shaft timing chain tensioning device in which a chain (not shown) is tensioned by a frictional self-locking snail cam 14 torsionally spring-urged at 15 in the direction of increasing radius on a tensioner blade 11 to automatically maintain correct chain tension, the tensioner blade is additionally loaded by a supplementary spring freely deflectable between limits, i.e. the maximum deflection amplitude that may occur when the tensioned chain oscillates or whips under the effect of sudden shock loads, such that the normal chain tensioning set by the snail cam is unaffected thus preventing the chain tension from being undesirably raised with consequent chain overstrain. As shown, the supplementary spring 19 is mounted between a fixed base 17 and an arm 18 which carries the snail cam 14 and is pivotably mounted on the base 17, the arm 18 having a projection 20 engaging a clearance hole 21 which defines the deflectable limits, a rubber sleeve (22) being arranged on the projection 20 (Fig. 4, not shown) to prevent chatter noise. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a torsionally loaded hollow end-face cam (114) replaces the snail cam and operates on a similar principle in which sudden shock loads are absorbed by axial movement of the cam assembly on a spring-loaded sleeve (118) limited in axial movement. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the snail cam (214) is directly mounted on the fixed base (217) and acts through a limited deflection leaf-spring (219). Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) are similar to Figs. 1 and 3, respectively, with the additional feature that the snail cam surface and/or the tensioner blade are serrated to increase the frictional self-locking action, and the cam may be of oscillating-suppressing rubber.
