GEORGE F. HALL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN T. UHL, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINATION SQUARE, LEVEL, AND RULE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed August V18, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE F.` HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Square, Level, and Rule Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in- 'vent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference, generally, to `improvements in that class of articles adapted for use by carpenters, draftsmen, and others, as a combined square, bevel, level, and a means for finding centers, as well as for scribing circles and arcs of circles; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed combination tool for the above stated and other uses, which is made in the form `of an attachment adapted to be readily and quickly mounted in an operative relation to a carpenters rule, and is just as quickly detached therefrom.
The invention hasfor` its principal objects to provide a novel and simply coni structed, as well as an easily manufactured device or tool of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth, the same being readily attachable to and detachable from the ordinary carpentersrule, to be `used as a square, a bevel, and for many other similar uses.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present in vention.
`With the various objects of the present invention in View, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel and simple com* pound tool and rule-attachment hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts thereof,
as well as in the details of the constructionw of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following, specica- Serial No, 493,399.
tion, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, in which :amV
Figure l is a plan View of a combination tool, made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the same being shown attached in an operative position to the usual carpenters rule.
Figure 2'is asimilar view of the combination tool, 4detached from the said rule; Fig ure 3 is a topi-edge View of the same; and Figure 4 isa cross sectionalV representation of the tool, said section being taken on line 4 4 in said Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrow az.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to Figures l to 4 inclusive, the reference-character l indicates a complete combination tool or rule-attachment, showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, the device, in general, being of a triangular configuration, as shown more particularly in Figure 2, comprising a base member consisting of an arrangement of lower bars or members 2 yand 3, and the intermedia- te connecting members 4 and 5, arranged at 45 degrees to said members 2 and 3, so as to provide an angle of 90 degrees between the members 4 and 5. At the ends of the respective members 2 and 3, are right- angled members 6 and 7, from which extend the members 8 and 9, meeting in a point, `as at 10, said members 8 and 9 being also disposed at' 45 degrees to the plane of the lower faces of said bars or members 2 and 3. At the joint l0 of the members 8 and 9 is a suitably pointed pivot-point or centering pin 1l, and connecting the said members 8 and 9 is a body-portion l2, having a laterally eX- tending tubular portion for the securing therein 0f a level, as 13, which is partially exposed, for reading purposes, above curved or arcshaped portion 114 of the said body-member l2. Extending from the lower marginal surface-portion of said body-member l2, and respectively connected with the members2, 4, 5 and 3, are-other A Ul members 14, 15 and 1G, said latter members being respectively provided with alincd ci'rcular holes, as 17,- 18 and 19, forn'iing bearing-guides for movably mounting therein a stem or rod 20. Secured to one end of said stemor rod 20, by means of a screw 21, or otherwise, is a plate 22, said plate norn'ially resting against the outer face 23 of the member 111, and` being provided with a forwardly extending portion, as 2l, from which extends at a right-angle, a clamping lug or member 25, said lug or member extending' into and from a suitably formed guiding'opening or hole 2?, in a projection 2G with which the member 1st is provided upon its upper surface, as will be seen from an inspection of said Figure the drawings. At its opposite end, the said stem or rod 20 has a screw-threaded part 28, upon which is adjustably"disposed an internally screw-'threaded sleeve or nut 29, the slotted end of which is adapted to receive a screw-driver, for its proper adjustment uponthe screw-threaded portion of the stenror rod 20, being suitably disposed in a hole or openingA 30, with which the member 5 is provided'. y Encircling the said stemA or rod yQ0, between the member 16 and the end of said sleeve or nut 29 is a coil-spring 31, the initial tendency of which is to force.- the said stem or rod 20, and the clampinglug or member 25 in the direction indicated by the arrow e, shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. As shown, the said member 9 is provided with a retaining guidelug orprojection 32, and in alinement with said guide-lug or projection 32, at the junction of the members 3 and 5 is another guide-lug 38, between which'two guide-lugs andthe endof the clamping lug 25, a folded carpenterslrule, as 34, can be forcibly sprung,.aswill be evident, and suitablyv held byV frictional holding` engagement, as will be fullyunderstood-from an inspection of said'Figurel of the drawings The mannerof securingi the combination tool to the carpenters rule will be. readily seen froman inspection of the several ligures of the drawings; and, the manner of employing the attachment as a square, a bevel, a: level, as well as for scribing circles, andzarcs of circles, will be readily understood, and any further description of the. same is therefore deemed unnecessary.
#Of course; I Vam aware that some changes may be made'in the general arrangen'ients and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as inthe details of the construction vof the same, without departing from: the scope of the .present invention as set forth in t-he foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended ,t-hereto -Hen ce,. I do not limitany presentf'iventioirto the exacttarrangerneute and combinations-of the various Y., i ffl" devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do l conline myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
