COMBINED PUNCH AND SPAGING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1919.
' Application filed September 3, 1918. sen-(11m. 252,392.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KERsI-IAw, a subject of theKing of Great Britain, residing at Kearney, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Punches and Spacing Devices, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to a combined punching and spacing device.
An important object of the invention is to provide means whereby a punch may be quickly and conveniently employed for forming starting drill openings, which are equidistantly spaced, without the employment of dividers, ordinarily used for spacing such openings.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is adjustable to compensate for wear upon the punch element, or ring element, or both.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same, parts being in elevation,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the Punch element removed,
Fig. 1 is a central longitudinalsectional view through the tubular ring punching element, the same being removed,
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on line 66 of Fig. 2, and,
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a section of metal, illustrating the use of the device.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a punch element, having its forward end pointed, as shown at 6. Near its rear end the element 5 has an enlarged portion 7, which is screw-threaded, as shown at 8. This enlarged portion or shank is equipped with a preferably milled head 9, to turn the punch element.
The numeral 10 designates a tubular ring punching element, as a whole, which is mounted to slide upon the punch element 5. This ring punching element has its forward end sharpened, as shown at 11. The element 10 carries a radial screw 12, projecting into a longitudinal groove 13, formed in the punch element 5. This screw and groove retains the punch element and tubular ring punching element assembled, but
does not prevent the reciprocation of the element 10, upon the punch element 5.
The numeral 1 1 designates an adjustable stop, as a whole, comprising a ring 15, having screw-threaded engagement with the enlarged portion 7 This ring carries a sleeve 16. The lower end of the head 9 projects into the sleeve 16, and the lower end of this sleeve receives a reduced extension 17, of the element 10. This reduced extension is adapted to contact with the ring 15, thus serving as a stop.
A compressible coil spring 18, surrounds a portion of the punch element 5, and is confined between the enlarged portion 7 and a shoulder 18 of the element 10, and thus serves to force the element 10 forwardly upon the punch element 5.
In Fig. 7, the numeral 19 designates a section of sheet metal, such as iron or steel. This section of metal has marked thereon a triangle 20, to be cut therefrom.
In the use of my device, the punch element 5 is placed near a portion of the line 20, so that the circular edge 11 will contact with the same. The head 9 is now struck with a hammer, whereby the punch element 5 forms the opening 21, for the drill, and the edge 11 forms the ring 22. The device is then moved to the right so that the edge 11 will contact with the line 20 and the ring 22, subsequent to which the head 9 is struck with the hammer, providing the next openin 21, and ring 22. It is obvious that the serles of openings 21 may'thus be readily formed, and these openings will be equidistantly spaced. The openings 21 are now employed to start a drill, and when the drill openings are cut, the inner portion of the metal may be knocked out, as is well known, the drill having the same diameter as the ring punching element.
When the punch element 5 is shortened by grinding of the point 6, the stop element 14 is turned upon the enlarged portion 7,
to be adjusted longitudinally thereof, so that the element 10 may move rearwardly a greater distance upon the element 5.
It is obvious that by removing the-screw 12, the punch element 5 may be withdrawn fromithe element 10, and" the stop element 14; removed from the punch element 5.
It is to beunderstood that the formof my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preierred example of the same, and that various changes I in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention'or the scope of the subjoined claims;
Having thus described my invention, 1- claim:
1-. A combined punching and spacing device, comprising. a punching element, a tubular-:ring punching element mounted to slide upon the punching element', and a stopcarried by'the punching element to-contact with one end of the tubular ring punching element.
2. A combined punching and spacing de- I lar ring punching element mounted to slide upon the punching element, yielding means to oppose the longitudinal movement of the tubular ring punching element in one direction with relation to the punching element, and a stop carried by the punching element to contact with one end of the tubular ring punching element.
3; A combined punching and spacing device, comprising a punching element, a tubular ring punching element mounted to slide thereon, yielding: means to oppose the longitudinalmovement of the tubular ring pu-nching; element in one direction with relation to the punching element, and a stop longitudinally adjustably. mounted upon thepunching element and arranged to contact with one end of the tubular ring punching element; v
In testimony whereof I- affix my signature 1npresence oftwowitnesses.
HENRY KERSHAW.
